Dear Alumni and Friends,

Hello again! This is the second letter to the new Georgetown Rugby Football Club Alumni Association. First of all I would like to apologize for this letter being delayed in arriving to you. We initially planed to send out this mailing a few months ago but some delays prevented us from keeping to our schedule. However I would like to thank you for the great response that we have had to the first mailing, it seams everyone is very enthusiastic about this and that is very encouraging for us as we have put a lot of time into this. We are planning to send out a mailing every three months to keep you informed on what is happening in the club and any new services or events on offer. As you might have noticed I have taken over from Thomas as director, as he graduated in may.  This letter is packed with updates and information so I hope you take the time to read it.

Enough of that. The club has been busy since the last time you herd from us. We had a great spring season that saw the team win the Capital Cup for the second season in a row. The team took a trip down to New Orleans for Tulane University’s Mardi Gras Rugby Tournament. We played hard and then enjoyed the southern hospitality at Mardi Gras in true Georgetown Rugby style! We placed third in the tournament with the only loss to University of Illinois Chicago. The second tournament of the season was the Washington Irish St. Patrick’s Day Tournament where the team played very well defeating Villanova and Kutztown only loosing to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a regular sweet sixteen contender, in the semi-finals. The team went up to Philadelphia to play the University of Pennsylvania, and came away with a huge victory, 63-32. The high hopes that the team had for this year’s Cherry Blossom Tournament did not really materialize, but it is always nice playing on the National Mall. Our next game was against Washington Rugby Club’s C-side, and we thought that we could teach those old dogs a few new tricks, as it turned out they taught us bulldogs a few things!

The climax of the season of course was the Capital Cup. Started in 1990 the Capital Cup, hosted by our cross-town archrivals Catholic, is the DC Collegiate championship. Last year we won the cup for the first time in five years and now we were not about to loose it again. We easily disposed of George Washington in the first round and eagerly awaited Catholic in the finals. The first half remained close, but in the second half we took control of the game and posted a 34-0 final score. This prompted a field invasion at the final whistle by our alumni and friends who had come to watch the game. If you would like more comprehensive match reports and pictures please visit our web site: https://members.tripod.com/GURFC. Our fall 1999 schedule is also included in this letter and can also be seen on our web site. If you are in town for any of our games please let us know.

We had our annual Rugby Ball at the New Zealand Embassy this year after the season was finished. It continued to be the most exclusive event on campus with only rugby players and their dates in attendance.  A great time was had by all and once again it was one of the highlights of the year.

We have a strong team coming back next year and we have every expectation of having a spectacular season. Our captain this year is Jean-Baptiste Seilliere. As you might have guessed from his name, yes, he is French. He had been playing for a number of years in France before he came to Georgetown and he brings the knowledge and experience to the team that enables him to be a great captain.

As you know we are planning on offering you all a copy of the Georgetown Rugby Alumni Directory. In order determine how many we need for printing we would like you to let us know if you are interested.  If you have not sent us an address card with your full information (including name, address, phone, fax, email, year of graduation, employer, position, etc.) please do so as soon as possible.  Alternatively you can confirm your information with us on our web site, there is a form that can be filled out that will be sent to us by e-mail. It is located at https://members.tripod.com/GURFC/alumni/alumni.html. You will also find a message board that has been set up for your use at that address.

I have a few things planned for the near future for the Association. I hope to make the club and association (as one) non-profit. This will provide many advantages to the club including tax-deductible donations and reduced postage for mailings, also giving the club structure and continuity going into the new millennium. Some alumni news, a group of alumni played in a tournament this summer under the name ‘Georgetown Rugby Old Boys’ in Monmouth, NJ. The team consisted of players ranging from the class of 1990 to the class of 2000. They defiantly represented, winning the tournament in the men’s b division. They out scored their opponents 128-12; the victims included South Jersey (40-7) in the semi final and Kutztown Alumni (17-7) in the final. The MVP’s were the two locks Chris Miller and Chris Westrick both playing phenomenally throughout the whole tournament. The alumni are alive and well.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the seniors that graduated this year, Thomas Brenninkmeyer, Steve Yang, Douglas Meisel, Philip Strunk, Karl Herchold, Chris Montroy, Dan Meade, Jason Doctor and Robert Wrona. They contributed so much to the club over the years and we are all truly grateful. We wish them luck in the future in whatever they choose to do and where ever life takes them.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to call, email or write us. We love hearing from you and would like to hear what you guys think and any suggestions that you might have, as this is your association. Finally if you would rather receive this letter by email please fill out the form on the web site or email me directly.

Thanks!
